"Middle-class parents spend much more time talking to children, answering questions with questions, and treating each child's thought as a special contribution. And this is very tiring work."

Salon says: Funny, that doesn't sound like work; that sounds like having a conversation.

Anything can be work if you're forced to do it against your wishes. And for those of us who parent, having to have a conversation with a 3 year old when you'd much rather just sip your coffee and read the paper IS work. Unfortunately, children don't read social cues the way adults do, and can't just entertain themselves when we need a little down time. So enjoying your kids becomes a matter of finding ways to make your activities with them a choice, and not something forced on you. Which means changing either your attitude or your reality - sometimes, getting a babysitter is the best thing you can do for your relationship with your child.
