This blog is for thinking parents, and fans of the best Q&A site for parents

On Anonymous

One of the tenets of our (your!) fledgling site is that you’ll be able to:

Read about parenting without the polemics, flame wars, or the underlying message that there’s only one right way to do things.

In the last few months, we’ve been mostly very impressed (and not surprised!) by the quality and tone of the answers on the site – we’ve been learning a lot, enjoying the discourse, we’ve been helped and supported and we’ve seen others helped and supported as well. (Thank you!)

But we’ve also seen an increasing trend of “anonymous” questions and answers since we first launched the feature last fall. We’ve had plenty of good trends since last fall, but this is not one of them!

Folks are telling us that when an topic is not obviously sensitive or private, “anonymous” comes across as a shield to hide behind, it encourages us to state things a bit more brusquely than we otherwise might, and invites new users to mistrust the community at large – is it not safe to post here, is that why people post anonymously?

So, think carefully! Does this post really need to be anonymous? If you’re using your real name and finding yourself uncomfortable posting as yourself, you might want to consider a pseudonym. Of course, if a question or answer is sensitive or private, please DO use “anonymous”, but if it’s not, going forward please DON’T.

Thanks! And keep up the great posts!
