This blog is for thinking parents, and fans of the best Q&A site for parents

We have a name!

Today we’ve selected a name and URL for our site-to-be: Parents Guild!

Why we like it:

  • The term guild suggests that parenting is a craft. It implies we are learning our craft as we go. We work together to share knowledge and learn from those who may have attempted or mastered some aspect or another of parenting.  This is the core mission of the site.
  • Also, the name suggests we parents are a team working to advance the craft of parenting and support each other. This is especially true in local communities where parents look to each other for childcare, doctor, teacher & brick-and-mortar store recommendations,  etc.  Ecologists use guild to mean:

A group of species that utilize the same kinds of resources, such as food, nesting sites, or places to live, in a similar manner. (McGraw-Hill Encyclopedia of Science and Technology, 5th edition)

  • Guild even suggests a possible future of collective action, for example a sub-group may organize to remove BPA from bottles or launch a school funding ballot initiative. Historically, a guild’s

functions included…setting standards for quality of goods, maintaining stable prices, and gaining leverage in local governments in order to further the interests of the guild. (Britannica Concise Encyclopedia)

(Now all we need is a coat of arms!  Submissions / ideas welcome! :)

[In truth, as much as we like this name, in reality it's a working title.  Like all other aspects of this project and the site-to-be, the name will be co-created by us, the founders, together with our user community. We like this name but if we find it doesn't work or a better one is suggested, we shall go forth and iterate!]

Congratulations! a fine name. And, undoubtedly, in the not so distant future, a fine fine coat of arms! (which is a weird thing if you stop to think of it literally. Coat of arms. Coat. of. arms.)

I agree with Katja! I really like the name you settled on (even though KidAngle is a close second, right?).
